Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian appeared on the panel of Shark Tank for the first time on Season 17 Episode 4, which aired on October 22, 2025. Alexis Ohanian’s entrepreneurial journey started with the launch of Reddit in 2005 with Steve Huffman and Aaron Swartz.

The platform quickly took off and was bought by Condé Nast the following year for somewhere between $10 and $20 million. Even after the sale, he stayed connected to the company he helped build.

Outside of tech, Ohanian is well known for his marriage to tennis superstar Serena Williams. They got married in November 2017 and are now parents to two daughters.

Alexis Ohanian’s Entrepreneurial Journey From Breadpig to 776

In 2007, Alexis Ohanian founded Breadpig, a venture that helps self-publishers and directs its profits to charitable causes. Three years later, in 2010, he co-founded Initialized Capital. It is an investment firm that funds early-stage startups.

Although he still remains connected to Reddit, most of his primary focus today is on building and supporting new ventures.

In September 2020, Alexis created a venture capital firm called Seven Seven Six (776). It is primarily dedicated to supporting innovative startups. As an extension of that, he also created the 776 Foundation to fund initiatives that make a social impact.

Backing Women’s Football and Track

Alexis then turned his attention to sports and created a track and field competition for women called Athlos in 2024.

Ohanian expanded his involvement in sports in May 2025. He bought 10% equity shares of London-based Chelsea Women FC and joined the club’s board of directors.

Alexis is also backing Angel City Football Club. The Los Angeles, California-based women’s football team competes in the US National Women’s Soccer League.

College Decisions to Career Breakthroughs

All of Alexis Ohanian’s effort, long workdays, and curiosity across industries paid off in a big way. Sources list him at roughly $150 million. But Ohanian’s road to success wasn’t very smooth or your typical kind.

While he was a student at the University of Virginia in 2005, Alexis Ohanian made a defining choice about his future.

Speaking on a podcast, he said, “I walked out of the LSAT 20 minutes into it. I’d studied for it, I was prepared, but it just didn’t feel right. I ended up at a Waffle House and told myself I was going to invent my own career and be an entrepreneur.”

Turning Rejection into Reddit

While studying together, Alexis Ohanian and his roommate Steve Huffman (who now serves as Reddit’s CEO) first came up with an idea for a mobile food-ordering service.

Instead of heading to Cancun for spring break, they chose to attend a Harvard lecture by investor Paul Graham called “How to Start a Startup” in hopes of pitching their concept.

Graham, the founder of Y Combinator (where Ohanian would later become a partner), turned them down at first. But the next day, he reached out with an unexpected offer. “Listen,” Graham told them, “we still don’t like your idea, but we like you guys. If you’re willing to change your idea, we’ll fund you.”

The once-in-a-lifetime chance gave Alexis Ohanian and Steve Huffman the push they needed to create Reddit. The site now serves more than 110 million users every day and carries a market value of over $40 billion.

Reflecting on it, Alexis said, “It all started with a Waffle House, and the rest is history.” The setbacks he faced early on didn’t stop him. Instead, they redirected him toward the career he envisioned in the first place.

Alexis Ohanian and Serena Williams: A Power Couple in Business and Life

Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian lead a family-centered life with their daughters, Olympia and Adira. They steer clear of flashy headlines and focus on building their wealth through smart investments. Serena is working to grow her beauty and fashion brands, while Alexis is putting more into AI, Web3, and women-led ventures.

Ohanian’s influence comes from many channels. Media appearances, authoring Without Their Permission, speaking engagements, and brand deals all play a part. They also contribute to his net worth.

Alexis also jumped on the crypto train quite early, picking up Ethereum at a fraction of today’s price. The estimated worth could now be anywhere near tens of millions. Together with Serena Williams, he owns high-end real estate. The joint property holdings are valued at roughly $45 million.

The couple’s combined net worth is expected to exceed $500 million soon, and their impact is shaping sports, technology, and social initiatives.

Alexis Ohanian’s Journey From Reddit to Shark Tank

Alexis Ohanian’s entrepreneurial journey feels less like a straight climb and more like a series of smart detours to success. From walking out of an exam that didn’t fit to walking into a life he built on his own terms, Alexis has made a habit of trusting his gut.

He’s moved through tech, sports, and venture capital with the same mix of curiosity and conviction. Joining Shark Tank seems like a natural step for someone who never stopped experimenting. Shark Tank just gives him one more arena to do exactly that.
