Pie Wine

pie wineKevin Klein and Josh Green give the Sharks a taste of Pie Wine, their “Original Gangster” wines that pair well with pizza, in Shark Tank episode 1501 – the season 15 premier. The guys are life-long friends who love pizza. When they set out to find the wine that paired best with pizza, they decided to invent their own and declare it the “official drink of pizza.”

The business started in early 2022. They have three flavors: red wine, dry white wine and sweet white wine. They’re all “gently carbonated” to elevate the pizza dining experience. They come in 4 packs for $20 and 12 packs for $60. Unfortunately, they are sold out as of a week before their air date. They likely want a Shark’s help with inventory.

Pie Wine Shark Tank Recap

Kevin and Josh enter the Shark Tank seeking $200,000 for 7.5% of “the greatest company ever.” What if their product could make you younger, more attractive and even re-grow hair? It can’t do any of those things! They break out a couple of cans of wine and say it’s a sweet, sparkly wine that goes great with your favorite slice. Traditionally, pizza goes with a light bubbly wine called Lambrusco.

The Sharks try their samples. Kevin leads the toast while saying “Les Chevaliers de Testavin!” The Sharks like the wine. Daymond says he never had wine with pizza but it’s delicious. Lori is confused by the packaging. The guys launched 2 weeks ago and they have distribution in 8 states with a $400,000 distributor agreement. That equates to $300,000 to $400,000 in wholesale dollars. They’re projecting $1.5 million for the year.

Josh has a morning radio show in LA as his full timme job. Kevin has a business background with a degree in law and accounting; he runs one of the largest spacial gaming companies in the USA. He cashed in his 401K to get the business started. The guys are 50-50 partners and have $300,000 invested in the business.

Each can costs $1.50 to make and they can get it to $1.25 with more volume. They sell to a distributor for $3.25. Retail price is $5-$5.50. The guys have been friends since they were 8 years old. Kevin’s wife has cancer and working with Josh has been theraputic for him.

Mr. Wonderful is launching his own sparkling wine; he’s out. Mark has a conflict with BeatBox Beverages; he’s out. Daymond says there are a lot of these kinds of beverages coming to market, including Mark and Kevin’s businesses; he’s out. The Pie Wine guys offer to buy the Sharks out if they don’t like the deal. Lori thinks it’s too early; she’s out. Candace thinks it’s to “kitschy” for her; she’s out.
