Boona

boonaBrett Skaloud and Jeff Feiersen pitch Boona, their shower attachment that allows for tandem showering, in Shark Tank episode 1515. The product converts a standard shower to a tandem shower without any plumbing or construction work. It pressure mounts to the shower walls much like a pull up bar. Simply attach the product to where you screw in your existing showerhead, mount the pressure pole and you’re ready to double up in the shower.

Skaloud and Feiersen have a lot of experience developing products. The met at Amazon in  2006 where they were both working as engineers on the founding teams for Go, Scout, Explore, and more. Skaloud started the company in March 2021 and Feiersen joined him in early 2022.

They got things started with a successful Kickstarter campaign that raised $774,113 in May, 2022. The company delivered the showerheads in February, 2023 and they’re now available on the company website for $249. The guys likely want a Shark’s help with inventory.

The Boona Tandem Shower

Boona Shark Tank Recap

Brett and Jeff enter the Shark Tank seeking $400,000 for 10% of their company. Showering with a partner sounds fun, but in reality, it sucks. One person is left hogging all the hot water and the other is left shivering in the corner. Two showerheads would solve the problem, but you’d have to spends thousands of dollars on a renovation. Now, you don’t have to.

They unveil a shower with a Boona in it and there’s a couple taking a shower. Boona is the only easy and cost effective way to add a second showerhead to your bathroom. It optimizes the water pressure using their custom engineered shower head. It intalls in minutes: extend the rod, connect the valve and connect the showerheads. It’s an instant spa upgrade. The say they’re done showering on their own. They say they’re looking for “a long term romance with one of you.”

Q&A

The Sharks each have a Tandem shower in front of them. Barbara asks about regulating the water pressure. Pressure was their customers’ biggest concern, but they’re rated 4.7 out of 5. They have just over 5000 customers. They did pre-order sales (via Kickstarter) in April, 2022. Robert is surprised they sold so many because he doesn’t think it’s that big of a problem. Mark says it’s an opportunity. They went live in July and started posting content on social media and the blew up. They had 50 million views on Tik Tok, 50 million views on Instagram and over 50,000 followers on both platforms and a mailing list of over 40,000 people.

Kickstarter sales were $750,000. This year (2023) they’re projecting $1.7 million with a net profit of 54%. The single head shower costs $249; it’s for people who don’t want to give up their hand held showerhead but want an additional one. The Tandem is $299. The cost is $69 landed for each model. They predict they’ll get to $5 million in 2024.

Is Anybody In?

Kevin says some of the best successes in Shark Tank history have been single product companies where the entrepreneur “maxed it out.” That’s Boona’s focus. Mark says it’s a mistake to try to build a brand instead of focussing on selling their product. Barbara says she can’t relate to the product because she loves high pressure and she’s concerned about cutting the pressure in half. She can’t imagine getting into the shower with her husband; she’s out. Robert says he has a fancy shower with multiple showerheads in his house and he just uses one. He wouldn’t buy it; he’s out. Mark thinks it’s a great product and they can generate a lot of cash but it’s not an investable business for him; he’s out. Lori thinks the guys are amazing but she’s not connecting with the product; she’s out.

Kevin likes it. He’s going to make 2 offers and he’ll let them pick one. He’ll offer $400,000 for a $40 per unit royalty until he recoups $1.2 million plus 10% equity. The second offer is $400,000 for 33.3%.  They counter at 20% for $600,000. Mark asks why they’d do that if they’re going to make $5 million next year. He questions why they’d give up 20% of their company and asks what they have in the bank; they have $250,000. After some back and forth with Mark, Kevin announces that he’s out. They ask if anyone wants back in and Mark tells them to “chase cash.” They leave without a deal.
