At an ocean farm off the coast of Maine, Inga Potter and Krista Rosen began farming kelp to create a facial oil that can rejuvenate the skin without the need for any chemical products.

The founders wanted an eco-friendly solution to stand out in the personal care industry. The kelp ocean farm also benefits marine life in the region.

Would Sharks come on board to scale this natural alternative for women with sensitive skin?

Founders’ Backstory

Inga Potter and Krista Rosen are friends who decided to partner up and begin this kelp oil business. Inga is a marine biologist and has always wanted to start her own venture.

On a walk with Krista, Inga shared her interest in kelp and its natural benefits. They talked about kelp farms, bio-plastics, skincare and pharmaceuticals. By the end of the walk, they decided to kickstart the business by setting up an ocean farm.

Product Overview

Cold Current Kelp is a naturally made facial oil that claims to hydrate, soothe and replenish skin for a soft, luminous glow. It is available unscented and also in different fragrances.

The big kelp oil bottle costs $68, while the smaller one costs $28.

Cold Current Kelp Shark Tank Pitch

Inga Potter and Krista Rosen came to Shark Tank with an ask of $100,000 for 10% equity in their company. They began the pitch by sharing the magic behind this ordinary-looking kelp.

The founders believe kelp could form the basis of a new line of personal care and beauty products because of its natural properties.

Sara Foster lined up a bunch of questions for the entrepreneurs, asking about clinical trials to scientifically prove the benefits. The founders said they hadn’t conducted clinical trials but had a 56% customer repeat rate.

Sara added that the entrepreneurs could improve the packaging to illustrate kelp’s benefits better, which the target female audience would find more persuasive.

After Kevin O’Leary asked about sales, the entrepreneurs projected $99,000 this year, a marginal increase compared to the previous year. This came across as a major pain point for the Sharks throughout the pitch.

With a making cost of less than $6 for the large kelp oil bottle sold for $68 and about $4 making cost for the small $28 bottle, the Sharks regained enthusiasm for the product.

What Makes Cold Current Kelp Unique?

Cold Current Kelp is a natural facial oil that provides chemical-free skin freshness.

  • Eco-friendly: The company not only protects skin from chemical products but also supports local marine life through kelp farms.

Did Cold Current Kelp Get a Deal on Shark Tank?

Despite creating an all-natural facial oil and making it to Shark Tank, Cold Current Kelp founders weren’t lucky enough to secure any offers from the Sharks.

Erin and Sara Foster shared that while they appreciated the quality of the product and saw real skin benefits, they had already invested in a skincare brand and getting partnered up here would divide their focus.

Rashaun Williams said the sales numbers weren’t enough for him to make an offer and went out.

Lori Greiner said she believes in the product. Still, her individual preferences fall more towards consuming kelp rather than applying it, making it difficult for her to relate to the product.

Barbara Corcoran chimed in, saying she liked the entrepreneurs, but the numbers weren’t right for her to make an offer, and she walked away.

Kevin O’Leary wasn’t keen to make an offer after hearing the sales numbers. He believed it would take a long time to recoup the money, but recommended that founders utilize higher margins to allocate more money for customer acquisition.
